Tackling Bullying in Hospitality

Karen Maher on Tackling Bullying in Hospitality

Featured Interview in Foodservice Rep

7 November, 2024

In a powerful new feature with Foodservice Rep, workplace culture and safety advocate Karen Maher discusses the evolving approach to tackling workplace bullying within the hospitality industry. Drawing from her own early experiences in hospitality, Karen described how aggressive behaviors were once normalised, but thanks to growing awareness, many organisations are shifting toward a safer, more respectful environment.

Karen emphasises the importance of psychological safety, encouraging both employees and leaders to view anti-bullying efforts as a core part of workplace health. Karen’s SmartCulture training programs empower staff and management to identify bullying behaviors and take proactive steps to foster a culture of openness and respect. “Stopping bullying is equally about ensuring safety,” Karen explained, “making sure people are psychologically safe.”

To further explore the industry’s stance on bullying, Foodservice Rep has launched a survey, inviting hospitality workers to share their experiences with workplace bullying and the ways they’ve addressed it. Responses will contribute valuable insights, guiding ongoing discussions on making hospitality a safer, more inclusive field.
